Gaspar Grande is a secluded outpost that aims to sustain independent artistic pursuits and innovation. It is situated on Gaspar Grande Island in the Dragons Mouth archipelago between Trinidad and Venezuela, a ten-minute boat ride from mainland Trinidad.
A remote waterfront artists’ atelier, residence, office and gallery are currently being designed by Rome Prize-winning architect Thomas Tsang. The space will provide residencies from two weeks to two months for artists and innovators at various stages of their careers. Each residency period will house one to four residents and will conclude with an event based around works created during the stay.
Artists’ Residencies will be awarded through international competition to artists working in Music, Architecture, Filmmaking, Design, Landscape Architecture, Visual Arts and Literature. Innovators’ Residencies will be awarded to those working on groundbreaking ideas in Physics, Engineering, Behavioral Science, Biology, and those scientists who would benefit specifically by spending time exploring Trinidad’s rich flora and fauna. Though residents will by no means be obligated to work in tandem, our aim is to create unlikely introductions and cohabitations which could potentially foster real innovation.
