Gudzowaty has spent the last several years seeking out unconventional athletes and performers from the far reaches of the globe. His subjects, though they have little in common in terms of culture, circumstance or background, are linked by a striking dignity and disarming gaze. They have gone beyond self into a place of immaterial consciousness that is at once completely within and outside the physical.

Nan Goldin recently selected Gudzowaty’s work to be included in her group show at Les Rencontres d’ Arles: “The American photographer invited 14 of her peers, among them the Polish photographer Tomasz Gudzowaty, winner of the 2009 World Press Prize, with superb black and white photographs of athletes reminiscent of Anders Petersen or Jim Goldberg.”
